Cryptography Research and ESCRYPT Announce Agreement for Differential Power Analysis Countermeasures Patents

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. and BOCHUM, Germany – November 2, 2010 – Cryptography Research, Inc. and ESCRYPT GmbH today announced an agreement which will enable ESCRYPT to develop Differential Power Analysis (DPA) countermeasures for use by licensees of CRI’s DPA patents.

“We are very pleased to be working with CRI’s leading security experts in the important field of side-channel protection. This agreement allows ESCRYPT to design, develop and provide DPA countermeasures for our customers’ software and hardware products," said Jan Pelzl, managing director of ESCRYPT Germany. Andre Weimerskirch, CEO of ESCRYPT USA, adds that "this agreement allows ESCRYPT to provide the best available security solution for our international customers."

"Security in embedded systems is becoming more important for a growing number of sectors, including the smartphone, consumer electronics and automotive industries,” said Carole Coplan, vice president of business development, tamper resistance solutions at Cryptography Research. “Customer requirements in these industries make DPA resistance a key component for hardware and software security. We are pleased that ESCRYPT has joined CRI’s DPA countermeasure developer ecosystem and will focus on providing DPA-resistant cryptographic systems and implementations in software and IP cores to these markets.”

DPA is a form of attack that involves monitoring the fluctuating electrical power consumption of a target device and then using advanced statistical methods to derive cryptographic keys and other secrets. Strong countermeasures to DPA help protect tamper-resistant products used in applications such as banking, pay television, mass transit, secure ID, secure storage, automobiles, consumer electronics and wireless telecommunications.

Cryptography Research has been awarded a portfolio of over 50 patents covering countermeasures to DPA attacks, with additional patent applications pending worldwide.
